The Right Way To Contour Ft. Celebrity Makeup Artist, Shraddha Inder Mehta

A cult-favourite makeup trend that we’ve seen evolve over the years has been the humble contour. This simple technique can completely alter your facial features without plastic surgery. Contouring focuses on using shadow and light theory. You apply a darker colour on areas of your face that you would like to push back. Fuller lips, a smaller nose to chiselled cheeks, contouring makes everything possible. While Instagram contouring can look pretty harsh in real life, it looks great on camera! So how do you contour your face?

We asked celebrity makeup artist Shraddha Inder Mehta, The Makeup Maven on tips for contouring IRL and here’s what she had to say. “Makeup on screen tends to be a little more defined, everyday contouring is a little easier. You need significantly less product but if you are using cream products, it’s easy to go overboard. There’s only one key step that most of us tend to overlook - blending! Blending your contour is the only way to ensure that your skin looks natural. Even if you think you’ve spent enough time blending, blend some more. Use a duo-fibre stippling brush to get rid of any harsh lines”

Shraddha also spilt the beans on the ‘makeup artist approved’ everyday contouring technique! Follow her step-by-step contouring guide and your cheekbones will be as sharp as knives!

Carve out those cheekbones

To make your cheekbones really pop, swipe a line of cream or powder contour from your ear to the apples of your cheek using an angled contour brush. You can use the Kareena Kapoor Khan Lakmé Absolute Face Contour, Lakmé Absolute White Intense Liquid Concealer or the Lakmé 9 To 5 Flawless Matte Complexion Compact in a shade that is about 2-3 tones darker than your skin tone. Make sure to keep the contour directly on the bottom edge of your cheekbone, so much so that your brush would be straddling your cheekbones as you apply it

Contour the hairline

If you have a very small forehead then don’t contour the area, otherwise, get some more powder and tap off the excess. Swirl your brush in circular motions along your forehead and over your temples, staying close to your hairline.

Define your jaw

Reload your brush with your cream or powder contour, tap off any excess powder and blend along the edge of your jawline, swirling in concentric circles from the base of your jaw all the way to your chin.

Redefine your nose

Take a small blending brush and trace a line down each side of your nose, lightly blending down to the tip of your nose and then back up until you almost hit the edges of your brows. This quick trick makes your nose look thinner, sharper and very selfie-ready!

That’s it, go get your phone, take a selfie, and brag about your newfound bone structure!
