Celebrity Makeup Artist Daniel Bauer on How to Wear Runway Makeup Trends in Daily Life

Graphic eyes, neon lids, glitter, there’s a lot that’s buzzing in the world of makeup today. But the question always is: how do I wear that look off the runway and in my daily life? So we got celebrity make-up artist Daniel Bauer to give us his personal hacks to acing some of his favourite runway looks from this season.

“I love yellow lids, they’re all the rage right now. Fenty, Self Portrait, they all sported yellow eyeshadow on the runway. And as much as I love the trend, it is a little difficult to wear on a day-to-day basis. What you can do though is use the colour scarcely on just the inner and outer corners of the eye. You could even switch your regular champagne or gold eyeshadow with yellow to highlight the inner corners. Opt for one that has some glitter in it so that it doesn’t look too edgy.”

“Glossy lids is another trend on the runway that I love. Honestly, it’s also pretty easy to pull off on an everyday basis. You could do it just like the runway and wear a layer of clear or coloured gloss on your lids. Remember to apply it to your lips and the top of your cheeks to pull the look together. But if just the gloss is too much for you, you could wear eyeshadow first and then apply a little bit of gloss to add shine.”

“Designers had a lot of fun with crystals this season and I personally loved Givenchy and Thom Browne’s approach. If you’re just starting out, I’d suggest using maybe one or two crystals at the most. A tiny one in the inner or outer corner of your eye is pretty without being costume-y. You could even add the tiniest bit of silver eyeshadow to highlight the inner corners so that your eyes really open up. In fact, swap your regular gold highlighter with a champagne or silver one, it’ll make a whole lot of difference.”

“Dark, extended eyeliner like Cleopatra is definitely one of the highlights of this season. I personally love accentuating the eyes because I think it makes all the difference, so this trend is definitely up my alley. But obviously, it may be a little bit too bold to wear to work. I would do an extended liner but keep it very thin so that it’s not too edgy. It also automatically makes your lash line look naturally dark. You also apply liner only on the top and not the bottom. So a thick black liner on the top and nothing on the bottom, not even mascara. Also, remember to keep your lips neutral and face natural with this look.”

“Silver is definitely the colour of the season. Ralph & Russo, Stella Jean, Anna Sui, they all did silver on the ramp. Some did it with just eyeshadow, others used glitter, so the choices are endless here. I’d suggest using just a tiny bit as underliner to make your eyes pop and then slather on loads of mascara. Another hack is using cream eyeshadow instead of powder since it ends up looking subtler. But if silver isn’t your colour at all try a light purple that has specks of silver instead. It looks just as pretty and is still pretty close to the trend.”
